You never know when it'll happen, or how. And it doesn't have to be a named natural disaster OR cause total destruction. The loss of personal property, memories and keepsakes, let alone business assets, is devastating no matter the cause.
The following are not pictures of a messy basement.
These pictures were taken in 2004, the morning I awoke to find that the main water line to my home had broken, eventually filling my basement with 3 1/2 feet of water.
On this morning I learned that washing machines CAN float...
...and so can chest freezers, even with 200 pounds of goods in them.
Games, crafts, memento's, gifts, clothes, linens...
...tools, electronics, appliances, decorations, and more--all ruined and lost.
While my disaster, affectionately labeled as "my indoor swimming pool", was photographed by myself and the insurance adjuster after the fact, it was very mind boggling and frustrating trying to recall everything that was lost. And then there is the mental anguish of constantly searching for items months afterward not knowing they were lost.
When my insurance adjuster questioned whether I had an inventory of my belongings, it was an immediately sobering moment. I had worked with disaster recovery planning in my profession but never thought about it for my own home.
